No
one really knows when or where "Steamers" were first created.
Most people surmise it was somewhere in central Connecticut and
sometime at the turn of the century.
Local laborers were served by food wagons and were cooked at home
by the early push cart owners and kept warm in metal buckets that
captured the moist heat or steam, giving them a rather unique bland
flavor. Adding a slice of sharp cheddar cheese created a delicious
compliment, and to this day has captured the taste buds of all who
venture here.
It has been reported; some folks put an overturned "Frisbee"
type pie pan in a frying pan with water and a cover, placing hamburger
patties on the pie pan, to make their own at home. Dale Greenbacker,
a local metal worker, envisioned a cabinet with trays and a door
to capture the steam and began experimenting with ways to work the
stainless steel to create the first chest. This is how BURG'R TEND'R
was born. He incorporated in 1979, calling his company Daleco, Inc.
BURG'R TEND'R is now sold throughout the country, gaining wide acceptance
in commercial establishments serving food. Thanks to Dale Greenbacker,
steam cheeseburger chests are widely available made by Daleco, Inc.
Now,
the steamed cheeseburger chest phenomenon is being carried on by
Bob Gattilia. He enjoys every aspect of the business, whether he
is discussing the history of the steamed cheeseburger or by carrying
on the tradition that Dale set, by making the chest himself.
Enjoy
the history of the steamed cheeseburger each time you bite into
the steamed wonder. |
